Can a Trailer be Cute?

Feature Trailer 4x7F-FoldUpCarryOn

Excuse us for calling a trailer “cute!” This folding trailer gets the job done, then tucks away until you need it again. The trailer’s bed is 4′ wide x 7′ long; folds up to fit in a 63″ wide, 24″ wide space. Need a trailer to fit in your garage but don’t have an extra bay? This is it!

It’s not just “cute,” it’s a real trailer, with a GVWR of 2,000 lbs. And yet,  it takes up about as much room as a small motorcycle.

Come see Carry-On’s 4×7 Folding Trailer here.  And if you’ve got a better word than “cute” to describe it, let us know!

Karavan Trailers – Galavanized or Polyester Powder Coat – How to Decide?

We’re excited to have Karavan Trailers back on our lot. Many customers have requested that we stock them and we listened!

Karavan Galvanized

Why Karavan?

Karavan utility trailers are popular general duty trailers, and they’re great for hauling ATVs, golf carts, and lawn equipment. The ones we’ve recently received feature ramps and tie-down stake pockets, making it easy to load and secure your equipment or vehicle. They’re also lighter than many similar sized trailers, making them more energy efficient (and a good choice if you have a smaller tow vehicle).

Back in Black?

Shiny silver boat trailers are what many people think of first when they hear the Karavan name. The galvanized finish lasts as long as aluminum and is about twice as strong. But Karavan makes more than boat trailers, and silver isn’t the only color choice. Many of the Karavans we’ve recently received feature black, textured paint with a rugged look. But Karavan’s black finish is more than a fashion basic.

Polyester Powder Coat vs. Galvanized Finish

The black Karavan trailers on our lot have a polyester powder coat, which is also long-lasting and strong. Karavan’s polyester powder coat is a baked-on finish that it is superior to a liquid spray-on finish, and known in particular for its impact and UV resistance. (This is an obvious advantage for boat trailers, as well as many others.) So which is better, a galvanized or polyester power coat? That’s not a simple question to answer. To select the best finish for you, think about how you plan to use the trailer. Karavan offers some good advice on its website:

  • Either an aluminum or a galvanized trailer would be a good choice if you boat in salt water.
  • A painted trailer works best in fresh water.
  • Remember, brackish conditions exist even in fresh water, and road salt and other elements in the environment can work against a painted finish.

So how can you keep your Karavan trailer – either galvanized or poly power-coated – looking good for the long haul?  Karavan suggests:

  • Always rinse your trailer off in fresh water after loading to prevent rust corrosion and lengthen the life of your trailer.
  • Wash and wax your trailer periodically to extend the paint life on your trailer, as with any vehicle.
  • Clean and touch up any nicks or scratches immediately to prevent rusting.

How’s That for a Fabulous Finish?

Galvanized and polyester powder coat are just two types of fabulous trailer finishes. Yes, we do get a little carried away when we talk about trailers. Hey, that’s our job.

Come see why we’re excited about these Karavan trailers! You may get excited about them too.

Find warranty info and maintenance tips on Karavan’s website.

This Just In: Parker Performance Trailers

We just received a new load of Parker Performance Trailers – and they’re ready to roll!Parker-Yellow-RP7716

Best Time to Buy a Trailer in Cleveland

The best time to buy a trailer – in Cleveland or anywhere – is when you need it. That said, timing is a tricky thing. Like a lot of things, trailer sales follow a seasonal cycle in Cleveland. While we receive more new trailers in the spring than any other time of the years, many of the trailers we receive in early in the year are special orders or pre-sold, as  landscapers, roofers and other contractors order new equipment in the off season.

Parker SA6610 Red Wood floor

Which brings us to now – which us a great time to shop for a trailer! That’s because the majority of trailers on our lot are for sale, not already sold. So come see what we have! Now’s a good time to take a good look at several different models and manufacturers, to consider the differences between a Performance Trailer and an Econoline or CarryOn, for example, or to decide whether you’d rather have a mesh floor (with a liner, maybe) or a wood deck. We have many trailers in inventory now, so it’s a great time to educate yourself and see trailers from many different manufacturers side by side.

Looking for a used trailer? Here’s how to evaluate a trailer before you buy.

Cargo Max: Going with the Floe

What you can do w/a CargoMax trailer by Floe International? Almost anything!

We think a video Floe posted earlier this year really tells the tale.

Not bad for a young whippersnapper of a company, eh?

Going with the Floe Since 1983

Regular readers know we flaunt our age – *ahem* make that experience. JTI has been helping people with hauling since CargoMax_DirtBikes_med1835, but we’ve got no age bias here. In fact, with more than 30 years in the biz, Floe can claim some experience now, too. The company’s history is pretty interesting – you can read all about it on Floe’s website.

Like JTI, Floe knows change is constant when it comes to growing a business. After getting its start with a single boat trailer (built by the company’s 19-year-old founder!) Floe’s product line has changed and expanded over the years. And while we certainly understand change, we also appreciate consistency.

Partners in Quality

Throughout the history of our partnership with Floe, we’ve found the company’s quality to be consistently good. And the CargoMax line continues to grow in popularity. Which isn’t hard to understand when you look at just a few of the trailer’s attributes:

  • Guaranteed to never rust, rot, or need paint…..ever!
  • Uni-body design includes virtually indestructible side walls – even at sub-zero temperatures. Not that we ever deal with that in Cleveland…
  • FLOE’s exclusive floor trussing system delivers maximum strength, water drainage and superior cleaning ability.
  • Practical? You betcha: CargoMax 1800-lb capacity trailers feature eight (yes, 8!) 500-lb. D-ring tie downs, strategically placed to secure whatever you load into the bed.

Hunting for a Hard-Working Trailer?

CargoMax by Floe is not only lightweight and strong it’s a FloeCargoMax-woodcinch to clean up. While we’re not crazy about blood, we have to point out more than a few hunters in NE Ohio have told us that it’s an ideal trailer to use when you’ve had a particularly good day during deer hunting season…

(Don’t worry, no animals were harmed in the making of that CargoMax video.)

Want to see the Floe CargoMax product live and in person? Stop in!

Trailer Construction Matters, Part 1: Atlas Trailers

Atlas Specialty Trailers is one of JTI’s valued partners, and the company has been for years. Built in Elkhart, Indiana, the trAtlasCargoailers come in a wide variety of sizes, with options galore. (We’re not kidding. There are about 18 pages of options in the 2015 catalog. We’d love to discuss them with you!)

Atlas aims to be the best value trailer – meaning when you buy an Atlas, you should expect it to work hard, for a long time, and look good doing it.

Why? It’s largely due to the way the company manufactures them.

Galvanic Corrosion, and Why Trailer Construction Matters

As we explain to our customers, Atlas trailers tend to wear very well.  Here’s one reason why: Most trailers have aluminum skin on the outside and steel on the inside. When those two metals Screen Shot 2015-02-04 at 11.44.01 PM(with very different properties) sit side by side, galvanic corrosion happens.

What is galvanic corrosion? (It’s not rocket science, but NASA makes it sound like that.)

Basically, when the two different metals are in contact and any moisture enters the mix (or your trailer), it starts to rust and break down – quickly. Atlas separates the two metals with a thin dust barrier that helps reduce moisture and almost completely eliminates contact points between steel and aluminum components.

Why you’ll care: After a couple of years, a trailer without such a barrier that has been used (or stored) outside will likely develop pit marks and other degradation. Atlas trailers look new, and maintain their structural integrity, much longer.

Trailers for the Long Haul

We sell a lot of trailers, both new and used, and Atlas isn’t the only manufacturer that makes long-lasting trailers. (We’ll cover important manufacturing information about Load Rite, Parker, Performance, and other brands in future posts.) The point is that trailer construction really does matter, in many ways, for many years after your purchase.Screen Shot 2015-02-04 at 11.44.26 PM

The experienced team at JTI knows trailers, inside and out. We’ll help you find one that suits your purpose and your budget, and that will be productive for you for the long haul. Take a look at our inventory online, call us at 440.232.4311 or stop in to our Oakwood Village showroom, just off I-271 between Bedford and Northfield Village. Trailer manufacturing matters and the available options may astound you. We can help you find the trailer that’s exactly what you need. ________________________________________________________________________

JTI, Cleveland trailer expertsDid you know? While today we sell trailers from a variety of different manufacturers, JTI got its start by making trailers. (Way back in 1935!) Later this year, we’ll begin manufacturing trailers again. Follow along as we roll with the changes: we’re on Twitter @JTI_Inc and Facebook and would love to connect there.  ________________________________________________________________________

Parker Performance Trailers: Powder and Pipes

Parker Performance Trailers

Parker RP7716 Orange HitchFirst, a little introduction is in order. The company name is Performance Trailers. The company’s trailers are often referred to (especially by repeat buyers) as Parker Trailers. Parker Performance Trailers is one of the brand names the company holds. At JTI, we frequently refer to Performance Trailers as Parkers. Now that we’ve finished the introductions, we’d like to tell you some of the more interesting things about the company’s trailers!

Extras That Come Standard

Performance Trailers are built to last. For example, the top rails are typically tubing – making them sturdier, and less likely to bow when you load things the lazy way. (You never do that, though, do you? No one does…) Performance also includes some “little” things as standard features – things other manufacturers sometimes consider “extras.” For example, the company’s highsters include tie downs and pocket stakes as standard fare.

A Rainbow of Utility Trailers

Performance makes a mighty nice utility trailer, and it’s among our most popular trailer and a favorite of landscapers. The variety of sizes and number of custom features really suits virtually every need. Reinforced cleated gates, extra-high uprights, and specialized racks and ramps are popular features.PurpleParkerPerformance-high-landscape-single_axle

Now, Cleveland-area landscapers are a practical bunch, but they also like to look good, and the colors available in the Performance line give our customers a lot of choices. From bright yellow to fireball orange to pretty purple, plus several shades of blue and green – and pinstripes! – Parker Performance Trailers help our customers’ businesses stand out in a good way.

Stop in to see if one of the sharp Performance Trailers on our lot is the right shade (and has the right features) for you.

Performance Powder Coating

We often mention Performance’s finish in our inventory descriptions, sometimes even referring to it as “the legendary Performance Powder Coating.” We don’t do that to be cute, we mention it because it’s a pretty significant part of the trailer. The coating not only provides a durable, great-looking finish, it’s also applied in an environmentally-sound, efficient process.

If a finish that resists scratches, chips, wear and stains (from tree sap, salt or acid rains) is important to you, you probably want a trailer that’s been powder coated.

Why is Powder Coating Stronger, Cleaner, and Safer? Science

What is powder coating? It’s a dry finished process that uses finely-ground pigment and resin particles. The particles are electrostatically charged and then sprayed onto the parts to be painted. The parts to be coated are electrostatically grounded so the charged particles adhere to them and are held there until they are melted in the curing oven, where they fuse into a smooth coating that is uniform, durable, high-quality and – bonus! – environmentally friendly. (Most liquid coatings use solvents and volatile organic compounds or VOCs, which are very bad for the environment – and not so good for the workers applying the liquid coatings, either.) yellow landscape trailer

If you love details, watch the video on the  Performance website.

Just interested in the bottom line? Powder coating lasts, and looks good, for a long, long time.

Car Haulers, and Now Cargo Trailers

From goosenecks and racer specials to steel floor car haulers and motorcycle trailers, Performance knows what you need to haul your vehicle. (And, for what it’s worth, so do we – having experience dating back to 1935 – but that’s another story.)

While we try to keep a couple of car haulers in stock (and we have a couple of carhaulers for rent) most customers who tow their vehicles have very specific needs. We’re happy to walk through the options and place an order that will match your needs and work perfectly behind your tow vehicle.

Another Thing You Should Know About Performance Trailers

As we mentioned above, Performance Trailers come to Ohio by way of Mt. Pleasant, Texas – so If you want a particular Performance Trailer that’s not on our lot, you can always order it…but it could take a few weeks for it to arrive in Cleveland. In other words – plan ahead. Or when you see the Performance Trailer that you want, don’t wait – buy it!

Why Buy from JTI?

People who depend on their trailers depend on JTI. Since 1935, we’ve been Cleveland’s Trailer & Hitch experts. Yes, we love to sell trailers. But our primary goal is to make sure our customers get the RIGHT trailer or trailers for their needs. If you need a lightweight, strong, all-weather, open tilt trailer, the Floe Cargo Max just might be perfect for you. If you need something else, we’ll help you get it. Come see why our customers have stuck with us for 80 years. ___________________________________________________________________________
