Your Business Rides on Bearings: Save Money, Time and Headaches by Caring for Them

jti_ex_10_26_14-26Bearings are the crux of the inner functioning of your trailer. You can’t see your bearings, so how do you know they are good?  In addition to that, how do you maintain your bearings to assure that you get the full life of them?

If you depend on your trailer, keeping your bearings in the best shape will save you time, money, and hassles. Here’s some advice worth bearing in mind.

(Sorry; sometimes puns are hard to resist.)

FIRST: How to check your bearings

This process does not require you to take off your wheel:

  1. Jack up your trailer.

    Support it on jack stands.

  2. Without getting under the trailer, grasp each wheel at the top and bottom and attempt to rock it.

There should be minimal movement. Excessive play may indicate that the wheel bearing is worn and needs adjustment or replacement.

  3. Rotate the wheel.

Listen for any unusual noise and feel for any roughness as it rotates, which may indicate that the bearing is damaged and needs to be replaced.

SECOND: How to re-pack your bearings

you can do it, but it will take me longer to explain it here than it will for us to do it for you.

Here, some examples of bad bearings.

bearings

One is bad, one is good, can you tell the difference? It is hard, that is why we do the dirty work for you.

bearings color

Here are the two cleaned off. The bearing on the left is discolored, still after being cleaned. Discoloring is a sign of wear.

bearings breakage

Here’s the last one – something you definitely do NOT want to see: broken bearings!

Bearings keep everything running smoothly: your trailer, your business, your peace of mind. Maintain your bearings by bringing in your trailer twice a year for seasonal service. We’ll check your bearings and make sure they are good.

That’s another way JTI helps build your business, save you money, and give you time for your real life. _________________________________________________________________________

Take Hauling a Trailer As Seriously As Shaving With A Straight Razor

JTI shop 11 4 -88

Anyone can haul a trailer as long as they take it seriously. HOW Seriously? Take it as serious as you would if shaving with a straight razor. You’ll get great results but you have to be very careful.

We all know that shaving with a straight razor gives the best shave. But, it’s risky, dangerous, and takes time and patience to get good results.  Hitching & hauling a trailer should be treated the same way.  Hauling a trailer takes time, patience, and level of good technique to make sure that you, your cargo, and everyone else on the road is safe.

There are some sensitivities that you should ALWAYS be mindful of while hauling a trailer:

  1. Make sure you are hauling the correct weight.
  2. Do a 15 point inspection.
  3. Align yourself correctly when you are attaching your hitch to your trailer.
  4. Watch your speed and control.
  5. Your driving style has to change: you are longer, heavier, and less agile.
  6. Take your time!

You’ll have great results as long as your are mindful of your trailer, your positioning, and your speed. Happy Hauling!

Seasonal Service: Does Your Trailer Need a Spa Day?

jti_ex_10_14_stockphotos-41What! My trailer is not a woman…?  Just give us one minute to prove our point.

Just look at the photo to the right… you have to admit, this needs some work!

Seasonal service will prevent you from breaking down and having to stand on the side of the road waiting for help while you could be getting work done. While the thought of a “spa day” may not make you squeal with delight, the thought of sitting on the side of the road waiting for assistance is much less appealing, isn’t it?

You’ve worked your trailer hard all summer; it probably needs some pampering.

You worked your trailer and now it needs some cleaning and refreshing. The off season is the best time to schedule regular “treatments” to keep your trailer ready, at your beck and call.

When that first hint of warm weather comes calling in Cleveland, your phone will be ringing and you need to know you can depend on your trailer, again, all season long.

The Benefits of Seasonal Service

The benefit of a “spa day” or regular maintenance for your trailer is that it saves you time and money by extending the life of your trailer. It also saves your peace of mind, because you’ll know your trailer is in good shape, ready to roll, safely and dependably.

While we have it, we will inspect it to let you know if any other maintenance is needed or recommended.

A “spa day” may sound like an extravagance, an unnecessary indulgence. But investing in regular check-ups and maintenance on your trailer isn’t just a “nicety;” it’s a necessary part of doing business. Faithfully caring for your trailer is an investment that’s worth it in the long run.
