Hitched Up and Ready to Roll in Cleveland 2016-2017

So another year is rolling by. We serviced and sold a lot of trailers, but that’s been true for 80+ years. What’s new?

In the trailer and hitch business, what’s new is technology. Automotive technology has become so familiar we find that our mechanical skills are even more rare than they were 5 years ago. As of today, trailers don’t come with indicator lights telling you your tire pressure is low or your battery’s about to die – but that may not be too far off in the future.

At this year’s NATDA show, trailer technology was on full display. While we have been in the business for more than 80 years, we don’t “just’ rely on our experience. We are constantly incorporating new techniques in our shop, keeping our technicians on their toes with training and new tools, and always working with our vendors to give our customers the best value for their money.

We know a trailer is an investment in your business – and it’s our business to keep you rolling!

Old Trailer? New Trailer? Ohio, We Can Fix That

Locally, we’re finding more of our customers want to customize their trailers to fit their needs and work even harder for them and their businesses. Whether you need to reinforce your ramp door or customize an enclosed trailer to meet your specifications, give us a call. We’ve #beenthere and #donethat as they say on Twitter.

Cleveland Predictions for 2017?

We’ll go out on a limb and say we might have predicted 2016’s Cavaliers would win the NBA Championship. We could say we knew how excited we’d be, but frankly, it was even better than we’d thought it would be. That Tribe/White Sox series was AMAZING and gave a whole new meaning to “wait til next year!”

(If there’s one thing Terry Francona knows about, it’s teamwork.)

Cleveland Browns Still Make Us Wonder

Cleveland Browns: Always something to talk about

We’re not ready to do any fortune-telling regarding the Browns…

What About Snow in Cleveland this Year?

We can absolutely, positively promise you, we’re going to get some snow! How much no one knows but all sources say it’ll be a lot more than last season. What we can promise: we’ll be here, six days a week, working on all makes and models of plows.

Cleveland Snowfall 2016-2017

“Last year we were lulled by a strong El Nino,” News 5 Cleveland’s Mark Johnson reminds us. This year, it’s a different story.

Cleveland temperatures are expected to be much lower this winter, and snowfall is expected to be “near to slightly above normal.”

“Get the hat and gloves ready!” Johnson suggests.

Trailer Tires: Bias, Radial, & How You Should Roll

We proudly sell Kenda Karrier ST Radials and Load Star Bias Ply tires. And although having quality tires is important (your trailer is probably carrying some mighty valuable equipment) is always a good choice, the most critical things about your trailer’s tires are that they’re the right size and are in good condition.

See our list of in-stock and special order trailer tires

While most of our customers understand that passenger tires are not made for trailers, it bears repeating.

Passenger Tires Are NOT Made for Trailers

Your trailer isn’t a car. It handles heavy loads around corners, on rough roads, and often at highway speeds. We’ll spare you the physics lesson: the fact is passenger car tires put your load (and other drivers) at risk.

Trailer specialty tires (ST) typically have stiffer sidewalls than passenger tires, which handle trailer loads better and help with trailer handling (especially preventing or minimizing sway).

So What’s Better: Bias or Radial Trailer Tires?

Here’s the scoop: the better tire for you is the one that will best suit your needs and usual driving (hauling) habits. We rarely “just” sell a tire – like everything else regarding our customers’ trailers, we tend to ask a few questions to make sure they’re getting the right equipment. But, to answer the question in a nutshell:

Bias ply tires are generally less expensive than radial trailer tires. That doesn’t mean they’re inferior. Their construction is different. Bias ply tires have layers of nylon laid at 30-45 degree angles underneath the tire tread. They are ideal for people making short and/or infrequent trips with their trailers. Some bias tires have stiffer sidewalls than radial tires, which can be an advantage for certain hauling situations.

Radial trailer tires are what you want if your trailer is on the road for long trips. They tend to stay cooler (especially at highway speeds) and last longer. Radial tires are constructed with steel belts running at a 90 degree angle to the tire’s tread direction. Due to their construction, they have a longer tread life and are tougher overall.

In the Long Haul, Are Radial Trailer Tires Worth the Price?

Generally speaking radial tires last longer, have less rolling resistance (giving slightly better mileage). Bias tires have some specific advantages in certain cases, but for the less-frequent hauler, are often the better choice primarily because of cost.

Remember, trailers aren’t cars and what you know about passenger tires rarely applies to trailer tires.

For example, on a single-axle trailer, you really don’t need to rotate your tires. Rules regarding tire inflation and PSI are also a little different when it comes to trailers and trailer tires.

With 80+ years in the business, we think it’s safe to say we’re the trailer and hitch experts. If you have any questions regarding your tow vehicle and trailer, we encourage you to call us. We’re here to help, 6 days a week.

Trailer Maintenance Tip: Fastener Facts & Why We Love Shackle Bolts

They may be small, but you shouldn’t ignore them: the right fasteners are important to your trailer’s operation, longevity, and can affect the safety of your load.

Small But Mighty Important: Trailer Fasteners

We’ve written before about how small, inexpensive things (like bushings) can end up causing a lot of aggravation and costing a lot of money. Fasteners are the same. We have hundreds of different nuts and bolts – including U bolts – couplers and other fasteners in stock, and regularly place special orders for specific trailer parts, including fasteners, to keep our customers’ trailers on the road and operating safely.

We try to provide as much customer education as we can, but sometimes, when we suggest a particular bolt that’s $1 or $2 more than another, we see a raised eyebrow and that “oh sure it’s the more expensive one” look.

Trust us, we won’t be retiring anytime soon by selling that $3 bolt. When we recommend a fastener that’s an extra buck or two, it’s well worth it.

Here’s why: basic nuts and bolts don’t lock down tight and stay locked down when used in typical over-the-road conditions. (And especially not when you’re pushing your speed or weight recommendations.)

We Recommend Shackle Bolts for Most Trailer Applications

Shackle bolts are knurled and self-locking. They stay locked in, even as your trailer bounces along the road.

Bolt Materials and Welding

We carry a variety of stainless and galvanized steel bolts and other materials. But in some cases, a weld is a better option than any fastener.

JTI’s experienced welders are here on premises 6 days a week. Between our hauling, mechanical, and welding experience, we can recommend the best options for your trailer.

Have questions for the trailer and hitch experts? Call or stop in. We love to talk about making hauling easier and safer for our customers and for everyone on the road.

JTI, Cleveland trailer expertsWe’re not the only people who are a little bit nuts about nuts and bolts. If you know anyone in classic car restoration, you know they’re serious about fasteners too. What’s that? You know all about the nuts and bolts of classic cars? Did you know we rent and sell car haulers? We do! 440.232.4311

Fluid Film Corrosion Protection

Yes, we sell Fluid Film. Yes, you can use used motor oil in some cases instead of Fluid Film, but seriously? Is that what you want to do?

We stock the popular corrosion protection in spray cans and 1-gallon drums, and order 5-Gallon and 55-Gallon Drums for our customers who need a bigger supply. (As is often the case once the snow is flying and salt is spreading…)

Long Term Corrosive Protection

Because it’s lanolin-based, Fluid Film will not evaporate or dry from the surface. It leaves a wet, non-drying film that protects all metals and moving parts. Fluid Film does not contain solvents. long term corrosion protection on all metals and superior lubrication for all moving parts.

  • Protect your trailer, plow, fleet vehicles from corrosive salt and road grime
  • Coat pivot points, hinges, gears
  • Loosen stuck bolts
  • Spray moving parts in light bars
  • Keep grass, dirt, other debris from sticking to underside of your deck
  • Spray lock mechanisms to keep them from freezing

Good News About Fluid Film

Fluid Film will not harm most paints and can be sprayed directly on most painted surfaces without causing any problems. It’s also safe for coating plastic, so you can coat or spray your whole undercarriage without needing to avoid any part of the body.

And tree huggers, relax, it’s environmentally sound, with low VOCs and has been solvent-free since 1943.

Versatile Protection

It’s also good for waterproofing leather boots and keeping shop stuff from sticking to them. Or, as a real Fluid Film customer said, “We use Fluid Film in our small engine shop and during plow season. Spray it on EVERYTHING on a mower and a plow. We wipe down door and window seals with it = no more stuck doors and windows on your car or truck. Spray down dump-beds and spreader components for salting. Spray all your hand tools, guns, fishing equipment. Basically, when in doubt = use Fluid Film.”

There ya have it! We sell Fluid Film, and other “cheap insurance.” Stop in for some today. fluid film corrosion protection
