‘Bout that Time for Ohio Boat Trailers! Storage Tips

Tips for Stowing Your Boat Trailer For the Winter

  • MAKE SURE YOU REPACK YOUR BEARINGS after your last outing.
  • Rinse all residue off your boat trailer and wipe it down.
  • Check the condition of your rollers and boards.
  • Ensure wiring is in good shape and that all lights work.

Ohio Snow Forecast 2015-2016

October’s peak fall colors are such a tease…because we know what’s coming, don’t we?

Actually, predicting Cleveland’s weather accurately, months in advance, is really outside of our area of expertise. That said, we’ve rounded up some info from sources who know more than we do about the weather.

Here’s our best prediction: If you’re a snow removal professional, you’re going to be busy again this winter.

Farmer’s Almanac Said What?

“According to the Farmers’ Almanac, the winter of 2015–2016 is looking like a repeat of last winter, at least in terms of temperatures with unseasonably cold conditions over the Atlantic Seaboard, eastern portions of the Great Lakes, and the lower peninsula of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, most of the Tennessee and Mississippi Valley, as well as much of the Gulf Coast.”

Nope, we’re not kidding. Read all about it on the Farmer’s Almanac site.

And that’s not all.

“Precipitation-wise, if you like snow, then you should head out to the northern and central Great Plains (most of the North Central States), the Great Lakes, New England (sorry Boston!), and parts of the Ohio Valley where snowier-than-normal conditions are forecast.

Over the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States, the winter will be stormy with a good amount of snow. We are “red-flagging” the second week of January and the second week of February for possible heavy winter weather with a long, drawn out spell of stormy weather extending through much of the first half of March.”

Did you ever wonder how Farmer’s Almanac makes its predictions? Us too.

Live Weather Blogs Scare Us

Predictions vary a little among different bloggers on Live Weather Blogs, but nobody’s saying “warm and sunny in Cleveland.”

To wit, of the Midwest Region (IL IN OH KY) we’ve read, “This area starts off slow but may have one heck of a snowy and icy round of weather the second half of the winter.”

Northeast Ohio, 5’s on Your Side

News Net 5’s Mark Johnson offers the best advice, in our opinion. No, not his thoughts on a frigid February (we don’t like that part). This was our favorite part: “Enjoy your fall while you can!”

Boat Trailer Lights: Common Sense Tips

Let’s get obvious: Boat trailers spend a lot of time in the water, so lights corrode. Just as obvious: lights and signals need to work, for safety’s sake to avoid accidents.cut screw boat light –  and for frustration’s sake, to avoid getting ticketed!

Want a little good news? It’s often cheaper and easier to replace the whole corroded light and wiring than it is to fix it.*

Do your boat trailer lights work? Need a service appointment? Contact us

Tips to Prevent Corrosion and Keep Boat Trailer Lights Working

The easiest way to prevent lights from corroding is to make sure you have submersible lights! Virtually all new lights are; check yours if they are several years old. (Yes, we sell submersible boat trailer lights.)

  • Rinse your trailer after loading up – and don’t forget to spray off your lights. Even if you boat in fresh water, some brackishness/pollution is present and will speed corrosion.
  • Once they’ve been rinsed off and are dry, spray all connections with dielectric grease to prevent corrosion.
  • Check your lights before you drive away!

What’s that? you’re a do-it-yourselfer and want to wire your own lights? Take a tip from the Boat Owners Association of the US; see its helpful info sheet on Trailer Wiring Care. We also recommend reading BOAT-US’s article about trailer tires. Happy reading, happy boating!

Boat Trailer Wheels rust too! Protect yours or get galvanized wheels. We’ve got them too

*Note: please recycle all you can of the old lights, rather than discarding in the trash. Mother Earth says “thanks.”

Cleveland’s boating season is too short! We highly recommend scheduling pre- and post-season maintenance for your trailer so you can make the most of the summer on the water.

Tent Trailers & Ohio Camping Fun 2015

When we say that many of our customers are Happy Campers, we hope that’s true in more ways than one! Do you camp? Read on to find out about some of NE Ohio’s newest campsites.

Ohio has an abundance of public and private campgrounds, and enough JJtrailers-insideTentvariety to give virtually every type of outdoors enthusiast something fun to do. We know because we enjoy having fun with a hitch too!

Watch the Jumping Jack video to see how to go from trailer to tent in 4 minutes! That’s #FunWithAHitch!

Best New Campsite in NE Ohio?

In case you’re new to camping in Ohio, we recommend that the Ohio State Parks’ website be one of your first internet stops. There you’ll find dozens of unique and beautiful campgrounds around the state. The Ohio Campground Owners Association has a similar list of privately-owned campgrounds.

Lake Erie Tent Campsite

Best kept secret on Lake Erie?

Now, if you’re an experienced camper and have started think you know all the best spots to camp in and around Cleveland, think again… Last year, Lake Metroparks opened a few new campsites and each one has its own particular draw. A couple have special appeal for fishing enthusiasts, but our favorite has to be the one at Lake Erie Bluffs, pictured above. Not only is the view amazing, the rates scream, “affordable family fun!” You can reserve the campsite perched overlooking our Great Lake for two Alexander Hamiltons. (And it’s even less for Lake County residents.)

Tent Trailers

If you (like some of us) think you’re a little too *ahem* experienced to enjoy tent camping,

Jumping Jack Trailers = FunWithAHitch in Northeast Ohio

you need to come see what we’ve got in store! Over the past couple of years, we’ve found a lot of people are interested in Jumping Jack Tent Trailers. These light-but-super-sturdy pop-up tent trailers are popular with families and outdoors enthusiasts for good reason. They’re built to last, with welded rather than screwed construction.  They’re also incredibly versatile.

Jumping Jack introduced a couple of larger models this spring, but we’re finding most families and couples who want to get back into camping (and maybe aren’t quite as young as they used to be…) find the 4x and 6x models are perfect, since they are easier to maneuver and require less storage space, yet fold out to be quite roomy. If you haven’t seen these extremely well-made tent trailers for yourself, please stop in and ask to see one here in our showroom! We think you’ll agree – Jumping Jack Trailers know how to help you have #FunWithAHitch.

If you’re planning to return to camping for the first time this season, you probably know your trailer could use a little TLC. We service bearings, brakes, fix trailer lights, even replace axles. Make an appointment for service to make sure your camping trip goes off without a hitch. (LOL. Pun intended! that’s trailer humor for you.)

So You Wanna Buy A Bike Rack

Breezing along the Towpath, taking a few turns on Cleveland’s growing mountain bike trails, or setting the kids loose on their bikes in the campground… Sounds great, doesn’t it? Let’s get the boring part over with: you’re going to need a bike rack.

Hitch Mount Bike Racks: Why They’re a Good Option

hitch mount bike rack

The Dura bike rack handles up to 4, 40-lb bikes.

You don’t have to reach very far to find a reason why hitch mount bike racks are preferable to trunk-mount bike racks and cartop carriers – hitch mount bike racks are a lot easier to load and unload!

While a hitch mount bike carrier is a good choice for you and your back, it’s also good for your vehicle, because bikes won’t come in contact with your car. (Translation: no dings and chipped paint!)

More good news: improved designs have made bike racks more aerodynamic, and most allow for easy access to rear doors and hatchbacks – meaning no more need to remove the rack (or bikes!) from your vehicle to get to the other gear inside.

What You Need to Know About Hitch Mount Bike Racks and Your Car

A bike rack will fit on almost any hitch – but that’s a deceptively simple and potentially dangerous statement. Regardless of the style of bike rack or size of hitch you have, put too much weight on it and you risk damaging the bike(s), hitch, and your vehicle.

The first most important thing to ask is, what kind of hitch can my car handle? Most smaller cars and sedans can take a class 1 or class 2 hitch, with some notable exceptions, like the Subaru Impreza and Toyota Prius. (If you have one of these vehicles, you’re not out of luck – see below.)

  • Class 1 hitches are intended to handle up to 2,000 lb gross trailer weight and a maximum tongue weight of 200 lbs.
  • Class 2 hitches are rated to pull 3,500 lbs and handle a maximum tongue weight of 300 lbs.
  • Class 3 hitches are rated to pull 3,500 – 10,000 lbs – generally, you don’t need a Class 3 hitch “just” for bikes, but if you have a Class 3 hitch, know that we have bike racks designed to fit them.

For vehicles that can handle either a Class 1 or Class 2 hitch, we recommend getting the Class 2. Why the heavier duty hitch? We hate to see our customers putting their vehicles, bikes, or fun family outings at risk.

How Many Bikes? Do the Math

A couple of heavy bikes are going to put you close to the maximum tongue weight of a Class 1 hitch – and hitting a speed bump or Cleveland-sized pothole may cause damage to the bikes on the rack and possibly to your car’s body or frame. A Class 2 hitch is needed for carrying 3 or 4 bikes.  Think that sounds like overkill? It’s your car – but we’ve never heard anyone complain about getting a mount that’s too sturdy. (The Reese website offers descriptions of all five classes of hitches. See the HowStuffWorks site for more than you might want to know about Tongue Weight.)

Bike Racks We Sell

JTI offers light duty V-Style Drawtite bike racks for Class 1 and 2 vehicles. We highly recommend and will only install a class 2 hitch that’s intended for use with a bike rack.

We sell Softride Dura and Element styles for Class 3 hitches.

  • Element handles up to four 30-lb bikes. The carrier weight is 30 lbs.
  • Dura handles up to four 40-lb bikes. The carrier weight is 39 lbs. Both are easy to access, especially from hatchback vehicles.

Is a Trunk Mount Bike Rack Right for You?

Family bike rides

If you’re transporting just one bike – or maybe yours and one small child’s bike – it may make sense (and save some money) by simply getting a trunk mount, all-plastic carrier. If that’s what you decide to do, we’d like to offer an important tip: while most vehicle-mount carriers are made primarily of plastic, many have metal clips or fasteners on the ends of their adjustable straps. When those straps beat against your car (as happens with normal transporting) they’re likely to chip or scratch the paint on your car. 😦 Secure the straps or pad them to avoid unhappiness.

Need a Hitch in a Hurry?

JTI offers “Hitch in a Hurry” service for customers who need a hitch installed on their vehicle. No appointment is necessary. If you have questions, call us at 440.232.4311 or stop in to our Oakwood Village showroom. We want to keep you rolling!

What if Your Vehicle is Rated Class 1 and You Want a Class 2 Hitch?

Don’t panic. While we can’t turn your sub-compact car into a mighty truck, we know the hitch aftermarket like no one else. (After 80 years of working on trailers and hitches, you learn a few things.) If you car cannot handle a class 2 hitch, or one is not made for your vehicle, we will work to help you find a good solution. One that doesn’t involve selling your car 😉

So You Wanna Buy a Bike Rack…

Here’s the bottom line: A hitch mount bike rack will fit in any hitch. But if you care about your bike(s) and your vehicle, you’ll want to learn a little more about hitches in general before getting a bike rack. Don’t worry, it won’t take any longer than it took you to read this article! Come in or call us – we’ll get you and your family rolling. 440.232.4311
